I'm seriously considering getting a Jeep Unlimited.

Comments, recommendations?

I saw the thing on Speed last night and had the same thought.
My only problem would be the lack of rocks and mountains to climb. Nothing but mud here in south FL.

Ya,
It looks like the big differences from the swb sport are
-air lockers, front and rear.
-4:1 crawl ratio with the manual, and still pretty respectable with auto.
-31" Goodyears stock.
-3500# tow capacity with the unlimited. It looks like you give up some wieght with the extra length of the unlimited, but with the towing and storage room inside increasing.

Dunno. It looks like they havent released this particular model in high numbers. I might just watch the availability vs. price. If it gets out of control, I'll just wait a year or two.

The other thing is my Tahoe. If I just buy the jeep outright, then I don't have to sell the tahoe. In that case, I might as well buy a used Rubi swb and save loads of cash.

The Unlimiteds actually have a higher tow capacity, since the limiting factor is the short wheelbase, not the weight. I tow a 2200 lbs double trailer behind my '97 Wrangler, and long highway trips and stopping when the road's wet can be an adventure.

I very much wanted a Rubicon Unlimited, but it came down to a extra $4k for the air lockers. I can think of a grand total of one time in the past eight years that I could have used the air lockers to get myself unstuck from a muddy trail, so it's just not worth it to me. The 3.73 axle ratio has worked just fine in the few chances I've had to use it for rock climbing in 4WD low, and in all honesty I wouldn't want the higher gear ratio at highway speeds as it puts the meat of the top gear too far out of legal limits. Also, the Rubicons come with 16" rims, and I prefer 15" rims for tire availabilty and cost. Just check out the different in price on 31" BFG All Terrain or Mud Terrians. Given all that, the standard Unlimited with the H package is much more appealing to me.

Not yet, it depends on whether or not we can get a variance to put an addition on the house. If not, we'll splurge on new cars. If we can, I'll keep driving the old Wrangler with only 197K miles on it. Smile
