Hey all,
I've had my 1999 gp800 for 4 summers now, and I am thinking of something different. It's got 167hrs on it now, and runs like a top. Top speed on the GPS seems to be about 57.7mph. I want something at least as fast, but with a little more room. My budget dictates I get something used, and likely looking for something between 2001-2003. I'm considering the direct injection technology as it seems to be better on gas at 'play' speeds. I hardly run WOT on the gp800 as it tends to porpoise mildy still. I'm thinking about either a: RX DI GTX DI or maybe a MSX140. Those anyone have any published fuel consumption numbers at cruising speeds and WOT for these machines? Thanks, Peter 1999 GP800 with 175+hrs ** Riva Performance plate, Pro-tec Intake Grate WaveEater Clips and Coupler Impros Setback/Repitched 14/19 58.3mph GPS ** Power Plenum, Reed Stuffers - To be installed. |

I don't think you'll be gaining any more room by going to an RX DI. If you are considering the RX DI, you might as well consider the GP1300R. Honestly, if you are wanting to move to a used 3-seater and are wanting something injected, I would look at a GTX 4-stroke. The GTX DI wouldn't be bad, bud I would rather have the extra power of the 4-stroke.

I will chime in on this from my perspective:
If I was going to go the Doo route the only way I would go would be with a 4-stroke. While the 951's have made leaps and bounds I still think there's a lot of strain on that motor to get similar hp numbers with 2 cylinders as Polaris, Yamaha, Kawi were using 3 to make just a few years ago. To me the MSX is a little more playful that the 4-tec doos. It will be faster than a regular 4-tec and slower than a SC 4-tec. I think it should be similar speed wise to a GTX. It is a well thought out ski with decent power, lots of room and storage, individual looks (you love it or hate it), great economy, etc. It is no rocket ship by any means but it's a wonderful cruiser. Additionally the domestic polaris 1200 motor has proven itself to be extremely reliable. I would think an 04 would be better than a 03 as they've worked out some kinks from their first year of production... Chris 2003 SVT Lightning 2004 Sea Doo RXP 2000 Polaris SLX |

quote: Craig, I have a wife (whom I need to get permission from and live with GP1300r would be nice, but too much money, and it's a pig on gas. I like to keep fuel usuage down to 50-75L per weekend ( 14-20gal) The GP800 is pretty small compared to the RXDI hulls. Both are similar lengths, but the width of the GP800 is only 44in while the RXDI is close to 48(?) I'll check the used market prices of the GTX 4tecs around here.... quote: Chris, The gp800 claims to put out 120hp from a 784cc PV motor. I believe the 951's claim to put out only 130ish..... quote: I'll keep my eyes out for a used MSX140 as an option. Any ride issues with the machine for cruising in the 40mph range? How about hi-speed cruising? My wife has an MSX 140 and it has been flawless. The bad thing is spark plugs cost about 12-16 bucks per plug but they last a whole season.
In the chop, she runs smooth as butter while I am getting the cr@p beaten out of me on my 1200R. The acceleration is about the same as an 800R. It feels nose heavy which explains why its an easy ski to spin out on. It handles fairly good. I would own the MSX 140 over the XL series simply because they are a more predictable ride. She consistently hits 61 on most days. Him = 2002 GP1200R 12/20(13/19) IR Solas Modified 65.8 GPS Her = 2003 POLARIS MSX 140 Stock 61.5 GPS AND..Lil Baby Cara born 6/28/04 6lbs, 12oz. |

We haven't done much this year to her ski since we just had a lil baby girl but we plan on doing some mods, maybe a head or prop. She has an 18 gallon tank but seems to get much better gas mileage than my 1200R.

quote: I hear you on the 1300 being a gas hog. There seems to be quite a few used GTX 4-strokes around here. It seems like quite a few people are getting rid of their 2-3 year old GTX's and upgrading to a GTX SC or an RXP. Finding a used MSX140 may be tricky simply because they haven't been out that long and way more GTX 4-TEC's have been sold than MSX140's. I had an 01Rxdi that I put 150hrs on. Very nice ski. Great storage, incredible milage. Would run between 61.5 and 63.8 on GPS. Great ski for 2 up. If you wanted a 3 seater Sea doo made a LE version with 800 fuel injected motor. If you want milage need fuel injection. Also had a xlt 800 that was a great ski on gas but would be 5mph slower than what you have.

quote: mtrager, would you say that the 'old' 951cc problems have been addressed? Are there any must do maintenance issues with them? Is there any particular model year of RX DI that I should avoid? Peter, 951 very reliable as long as you do not touch them. 2000 first year, stay away. Huge difference in fuel milage between carb and injection. Di will go just about twice as far.

I traded in my 01 GP1200R for an 03 RXDI. I have to say that I'm very impressed. Play speed was my priority and that's wear the RXDI shines. And it amazing on fuel consumption as compared to the GPR. My 2 riding buddies have doo's (98 GSXL and 02 RX) and both their machines have been trouble free. The fastest I've been on the RXDI is 61.8 mph on GPS. Not too bad considereing my GPR ran around 63.
Also, the RX hull is more stable then the GPR. It doesn't handle as well in the chop, but at a stop and slow speeds, you can definitely notice the stability. Especially when riding 2 up. Good luck! 2001 GP1200R Pump plug kit Riva top loader intake Solas 13/19 Waveeater clips |

1100 stx DI. GroupK mods.
Get the speed, cop handling stxr hull, fuel economy, and reliability all in one package. msx 150 gets better fuel economy than the 140 at play speeds i think..cuz it's only 750 cc engine. dav_dman@yahoo.com, used 04 rxp and B1 on the xmas list. 04Honda F12X at home, 02 in stpete, both boosted a bit. 97 venture1200 for sale soon. |
