I've got a buddy looking at replacing his 91 XP with something newer. He's got the option of buying a 99 SPX that has been built as a limited race boat (lots of cool stuff) but has only seen one race or a 99 ultra 150. Now I don't know a tonne about either so I'm looking for opinions...he won't buy a GP/R because they're alot more money up here and there are very few to pick from.
Thanks!!

Dok............Saw you posted this on Sea-Doo.net also. I don't know what your buddy is wanting out of a PWC but for an everday rider the Ultra will be a better choice than a modded Sea-Doo. Anytime you begin to mod something the reliability factor begins to dwindle.......the more you modify......the more the "dwindle". I know for a fact the 99 Ultra's were fastest out of the box PWC you could get.......and still are to this day. They were also quite reliable if left in stock condition. The only caution about the Ultra I would give you is the high-speed handling. Most are helping this situation with an intake grate and rideplate mod through Shredmaster.

I'd pick the Ultra.

I listen to what the voices inside my GPR glove box tell me to do.

DMD that was actually my buddy posting over at seadoo.net..he's a bit of a seadoo guy. He's not going to race so I think the Ultra is going to be a better boat as well. I just didn't know how reliable that boat was. Everyone says good things about it so I think that's the one he'll buy. I wish we had more GPs up here...its all effing Sea-doo!!

Thanks for all the info.

I had a 99 ultra , I loved it.I put sponsons, hydroturf mats and a prop on it ,also a group K head mod. It was a great boat stock and even better modded. But now I have GPR's, '00 and an '03. they are a lot more stable.

Woody, I purchased the plate with the mod already done by Island, so I can't give you an honest comparison of before and after the skegs were removed. My normal riding conditions are 6" to 1' of chop, sometimes less, sometimes more. In these conditions it rules for lake grudge racing. I did have to step the sponsons to stop the porpoising, once that was done it just hooked up and flew! I have basically no porpoising, and it turns very nicely in my opinion. I don't cc race, so keep that in mind.

I would get the Ultra, but I consider the shreadmaster rideplate a MANDATORY requirement.
The only reilability issues I know of on the Ultra are the pump bearings, they may need replacement as often as every 50 hrs but I think most go longer.

ditto, thats all i have ever heard of on the ultra. the ultra is a very good boat, in some instances probably more reliable in factory form then an 00 through 02 gpr. no powervalve issues, no wear ring issues, no cat con issues, etc...
