Anyone ever strap a 5 gallon can to the back one of the new GPR type hulls.. it does not look eaZy so the *** think will not bounce around... I am trying a 2 handled one from walmart and I guess the only way to see how bad it gets is to hit the river... I am to head up river some 40 or 50 clicks before turning back and wish to make sure I have petro to hit the first fuel stop on the way back.. which is (without looking at a map yet is approx. mile marker 20..)... don't ? if I am using plastic Eek

ps: I am to do the run in the mid ranges to see how far a 1300 will run.. once I know I am in range on the marinia's I will let my ski run dry to see approx how far the last drop goes...

might be illegal from uscg stangpoint.. spill would result in a slick.

I would have to agree with Dav.
Boy dont let the guys with a badge see one drop of that fuel hit the water. Oil in it or no oil.
Some of them only want one small reason to hassle a jetski'er.

Do you have a GPS? A lot of them will track your distanced travelled. That way you wouldn't have to tote around a gas jug. Maybe run it empty while your close to your ramp and check your distance traveled? Milage may vary! Big Grin

yes - i have a gps and it does track miles.. I just wanted to head up the Travis Lake in Austin, Texas area.. you can go up river some 50 - 60 miles plus.. The only issue is the last marina that I know of is at approx mile marker 20 +/- back in a cove.....

I thought of this idea from the craZy people doing the Florida to Bahamas run with gas straped to the jets...

Oww, I was thinking you were trying to figure out if you could make it the whole way.

I think I have an idea where your talking about... I've been to a restaurant on the river down there (County Line). Is that the river your going down/up?

get an msx 150... 6hrs of cruise time per tank. Engine will probably explode at 200hrs but your fuel cost will be very very low.

they don't make the Bahamas run with cans strapped to the back.

WaveEater has an external tank plumbed into the fuel system.

try dumping a 5 gallon can into a ski in 5 foot swells...

ThinCnet - It would be nice to make it the whole way - but I think we it will be close depending on how far I venture and how "BAD" the lake gets.. and the lake picks up in the blink of an eye.. I really don't care about asking for a toe.. But it is the looks when I ask.. I will let you know what I come up with!

As for the county line ??? I well have to check on that.. There is a place where you can pull up on your ski and dock it... (Carlos and Charlies )...When I was here this last weekend the harley people where around - some 50,000 of them... makes you want a harley - if you could have only saw all the women on the back...

JetEd - I was wondering about the can - but I am just quoting what I read on the bahamas thread..

ps: after looking at the WHO DOES WHAT thread -
we have a hell of a lot knowledge around here.. Also - I and a few others now know why it does not matter if u blow an engine.. just put in the spare... Eek

Sandman
I have taken Yamalube 1 gal container filled w/ gas and stash it in the bow. If you pull the bucket out it will fit on either side nice and tight. I carry another 1 gal of Yamalube to use which gives you another gal of gas when you refill.Don't use more than once cause The mill thick is not safe pls difference gas/oil. Just got back from Lake Charles La. Yesterday. If you run the intercoastal there are gas stops. We cruised at 40+ gas was good on my gpr1200 with stock carbs. Some guys straped on 5-6 gal plastic cans and had to retie several times.Yes the bounce. We ran into several USCG and no one got hassled.Been around Galveston to Matagorda same and no hassle from USCG. Places to pull over are there do your homework.

If you're going to carry a can on the back. Be aware of two things,
1) How will you use it to fill up, floating, standing on land, rough water, calm....
2) Build a STRONG bracket. You won't be able to just strap on a can. 5 gallons is about 40 pounds. Make something from thick plastic or aluminuim.

TO restate, 40 pounds of gas sloshing around on the back of your ski needs to be secured tightly. Once you think you've got it on good try picking up and rolling your ski by grabbing the can...

I carry 21 gallons on the back but it has caused numerous stress cracks in the hull of my XLT

Sandman, Your trip up and down the Lake Travis sounds like a blast. I hope you find a way to make the complete trip in one pass. I spent a week last year riding Lake Austin, Lake Travis, Lake Marble Falls and Lake LBJ. It was a great time. My girlfriend and I hit Lake Travis on a saturday and the boat traffic was so bad (lots of newbie boaters out) we found that the safest part of the lake was in the parking lot of the boat dock.
