If you want speed, keep your eyes open for a 2000+ GPR 1200. They can be had for around $3k this time of year and will fly with the right mods. Or you can look for a '97-'99 GP 1200, they will max at around 62-63 reliably with mods. The waveraider is slighlty older and still has a faithful following; you shouldn't have any problem finding one in your price range, if you can find one for sale.

also look at an Ultra 150, fast, fun and has probably the most reliable 2 stroke engine of any water craft. The 1999 was the fastest year, and you should be able to get one for about that price now.

What you buy depends upon the conditions you ride in. If you ride in any sort of rough or choppy water, the 97-99 GP1200 will beat you like a stepchild - you will be grinning during the process although after a while you kidneys will cry "uncle" on you!!!!

The GP is light and nimble.. which makes it fun and rough at the same time. It also burns a bit more gas than the GPR does (newer engine in the GPR... and with gas projected to go who knows where.... gas consumption is a factor to consider).

The GPR1200 rides better in rough conditions although is a heavier craft... and it is faster....

If you are looking to ride in really rough water... or open water (read: Ocean) ... you can't beat the Yamaha XLT1200. Gas consumption is good and it has a real stable hull... although not as fast as the GPR. We have two of them that we ride in the Chesapeake bay... and when things get choppy out there they are real solid. At this point you should be able to find a 99 XLL (later became the XLT) for about your price...

Also, in your price range... be wary of condition and numbers of hours... while you might be able to save money on a craft with lots of hours... it may bleed you dry over time in repairs.....

Good luck...

oh yeah.... are you riding alone or are you taking someone with you. If you are taking anybody with you (girlfriend, wife, etc).... look for a 3-seater (XLL, XLT in the Yamaha line).. while the GPR is rated for two people... not sure how realistic this rating is for a long ride.......
