What's the best method for securing a handheld GPS to a ski?

I read in the Garmin manual that the top of the unit must be pointed towards the sky for best satellite reception. They don't recommend laying it flat. If that's the case, I guess I shouldn't lay it flat on the glovebox cover or strap it to my thigh.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the link, elebouef.

Anybody have any experience with the suction cup mounts? Curious if they'll stay on even in the rough stuff.

Seaweed,
What do you think!

No way, man! Rip that expensive electronics right off and feed it to the fishes.

Are you suggesting I leave a trail of breadcrumbs instead?

My current GPS mounting solution is a "Davis Holdz-it" universal mount attached to my handlebar cover with a long velcro strap (not the sticky back kind). The strap feeds through the back of the mount and around the bars. I haven't tried it on the water yet but it looks like it just might do the trick.

Just to be on the safe side I'll keep a loaf of wonderbread handy. [Big Grin]

No digital camera at the moment. I'll have to see if I can borrow one from a neighbor.

I have the Magellan Sport track pro. I mounted the acces. mounting bracket to a piece of plexi glass, ran a web strap through it then around my Xp seat. Strap is from an old life jacket so it has a clip on it. Because I love to ride the surf and always have waves coming over the bars, I wanted my GPS in a protected area/position that would not get ripped off from the killer water rushing over the front end. I have two extra cords attached to my gps and the mounting bracket just in case it does come loose. There is no way that it could float away. It's been many months and over 30 hours with this attachment and it has never failed yet. I'll post some pic's at my site www.sun1.net . Look for my '03 XP DI pic, click on it and the photo's should be there. I'll check, if there not I put them there. It works great. I have three xp's so I can switch the GPS to each without a problem.

There is nothing wrong with putting it inside your box, IF it doesn't rattle around. The gpr seems to be quite nice and stable compared to my old Polaris SLTX. You could put a pair of sunglasses in that box, and all that would come out would be frames...and glass.

If you are riding flat water, handlebar mounting is ok. But, hit a wave or two and kiss your GPS goodbye!!!! Those plastic brackets and holders just won't hold up to the force of that water rushing over the bars. With my portable mount, the steering column/bars actually protect my GPS from any strong force of water. I also have a cord from the bracket and another one on the GPS itself attached to the gas neck, just in case it does break loose from the ski or bracket.

Life is one long weekend!

I use a combination of RAM and Touratech mount for my GPS map 76. The mount is rock solid on the handlebars even in rough water and though I was always afraid of loosing it it never shook loose riding in a rough day on the Great South Bay.

Etrex with a handlebar mount on UMI bars is fine and pretty reliable, IMO.
I just keep my Legend in a glove compartment.
