I spoke with a technician servicing the pumps today at a Gas Station. I asked him how much gas was left in the pump and hose from the
previous purchase. This is a pump that has 4 different grades pumped through one hose. He said 6 tenths of a gallon with a 8 ft. hose.
FYI

That's good to know. I've never thought about that before. Definately a big consideration if filling a small gas can from a single hose/multi octane pump. I'll keep filling my weedeater/leafblower/chainsaw gascan in town where the 89 pump has its very own hose. I'd hate to buy a gallon of 89 and get 6/10's a gallon of 87 from the previous customer and possibly abuse my Echo 2-strokes (good little engines. Never give me troubles)

I guess the trick with filling your waverunner's tanks or jerry cans if you wanted nothing but high octane for a modified PWC would be to top off your towing vehicle with a gallon minimum of high octane then procede to fill your cans and/or your PWC tank.

Personally, if my tow vehicle required high octane fuel I wouldn't worry about diluting its tank with .6 gallons of possibly lower octane fuel.

That is so simple I never thought of it.
Well, pick a station with separated hoses for each grade.
Or pour the first gallon in your car/truck first.

Here's something else to consider...

The last person to pump gas bought 87 octane late at night. Now that 6/10 of 87 octane pump fuel was sitting in the hose all night and you're the first one to pump gas the next morning. What octane do you think that 87 is down to now???? Eek

Ive been doing this for along time now. I pump at least 2 gallons of premium into my truck before filling my gas cans.
I doubt that the fuel loses enough octane overnite to be a problem.
