Hi phillip, I am using riva ride plate, no washers, stock trim tabs, no washers, rd intake and solas 14/20 pitched up to 14/22 and stock pump and stock cdi w/ protec mod. I had a full tank of gas and the chop was 1-2 feet the whole way in that section of the lake. The whole day even in the smooth I repeated the same rpm and speed. that was cool w/ me for today. I agree that 7070 if good for that speed and cant be disattisfied. Right not jay is running in the upper 7100's and his speed is mid 73. I need to find a way to achieve at least 7150 to get into the 73 gps range. Now yesterday's numbers were different due to weather conditions but also I need to repeat this in the heat like my run at 72.7. My boat porpoise so much at speed and I need to find a way to calm it down. Phil which cdi are you using and any benifits you observed w/ it. Any suggesstions phil.

I would think the protec CDI is fine - my R&D CDI with the custom curve I use has 13 degrees advance at 7000 - the protec has 15 at 7000 and 14 at 7200 (any of the Advent curves will be significantly higher at 7000)

For more rpms - have you done the Jetworks mod? and if so did you add a manual restrictor in line with the jetworks valve so you can tune the water flow? I also did the R&D Exhaust manifold mod, you might consider that as well.

My ski right now is porpoise city - see my other post on using an angled rideplate for ideas to tame porpoising. I don't know how the guys are getting to 75 and still have the ski handle in the rough. All the things I know of to tame porpoising also cost you mph so...........

Coop,

I remember reading one of FullBoogie's posts on here stating that he got more rpms when he swapped out his Protech modded cdi with a Advent.

Here it is (man that Fullboogie sure posts alot, Big Grin)

" I also made a few runs with Fercho's Advent, with everything else the same. I gained an additional 100 rpm and 1 mph just from a better ignition. And let me tell you, the holeshot, mid, and top end were much better, not to mention much better throttle response. I'll be placing my order this week."

Glad to hear your boat (BB Project) turned out good.

Thanks Jeff... I spoke to david today and he told me he wasted his money on his advent and he wished he never bought it. Said it didn't do anything for his boat. With all these motor upgrades, the timing does need to be advanced. On a gsxr 750 or 1000, we use a power commander and beleive me it will increase hp and improve throttle response. Boats are no different. Phillip, my cdi is a standard that was sent to protec to basically raise the rev limiter.. wont do anything to open the powervalves any quicker or keep them open. Yes I have the jetworks w/ no manual restricter. I never heard of the R&D exhaust mod. My boat only startes to porpoise about 70 in the smooth not rough water. Did you know that the stock ride plate is greate in the rough. For smooth riva. I hope to be at mid 73 before next month.

when Protec raises the re limiter they also make some adjustments to the timing - you can see the altered curve on their website and then compare it to the Advent curves (available on the Advent web site) Advent also publishes the stock curve

The Advent (and R&D) really raises timing in the 5000 to 6000 range - this improves the low end / mid range - I also know Carl is a fan of the Advent - I have always felt the advantage of a CDI was improved PV control in really rough water

I gained 30 rpm by fine tuning the water to the waterbox with a manual restrictor valve - $25 from Riva (same valve the provide with the S3)

The R&D mod is where they machine the face of the exhaust manifold .23 in - shortening the exhaust system will raise rpms

I have also had the exhaust manifold extruded by Mel Miller

I can't say what the benefit of the R&D mod or extrusion is by itself - all I know is my motor is running real strong - i just need to work on getting this HP harnessed properly

to tame you porpoising (bucking) you might try a washer under the front bolts of the intake grate - if that doesn't work you can try some air holes along the leading edge of the rideplate - if you want to try that let me know and I'll send you a pic

I tend to use the stock plate quite a bit - but then I have a 71+ ski (73+ sounds so much better!!!!!)

A little info on the Pro-Tec CDI MOD
The rev limiter is "moved" a certain % higher (aprox 10%)
The curve "shift" is ONLY a side affect of the rev limiter mod---meaning the curve is still the same its just moved up the rpm range the same % as the rev limiter

*** this is one reaason you must be careful in the midrange with the PRO-TEC box--- 24* at 6000 range instead of 5000--- combine that with compression and.......... Frown Big Grin

Advent makes more rpm ! - nuff said

I have just installed tipple pipes and I am running the protec modded cdi. I am having a problem with the valves closing at 7400 rpm. If i disconnect the servo motor and tie open the valves the ski runs at 7830. Is this a cdi problem? I dont think this is just an adjustment to the valves. Something tells me this cdi closes the valves at 7400. Am I wrong?

octane,
IMHO unless you are racing, or constantly riding in rough water, magnum pump isnt worth it. Yes the hole shot feel much better, but then again whos doing hole shot the whole time riding on the water. If you drag race someone, even they hole shot you, youll catch him faster than you think.

Thanks for the clear up Phil and Carl. I will get an advent cdi (know anyone who is selling one?)and try the restricter valve. NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS. Big Grin Today at clearlake, me rx951 and troy gpr were out riding and at two bars I struck gold. Weather 89* clear ski and 74.4mph @ 7090rpm. Yaweeeeeee Eek Eek Eek. Glad I bypassed 73. I knew I was hauling azz but didn't know to the tune of 74.4. We were all so happy. I could not repeat it again as When I tried the buzzer went off and the gas swished around and bogged me down. Thats ok though. Next week is another day. All the carb tuning phone advice from Carl and Lowell while on the water finally paid off again. This is the second day in a row I hit gold. 72.7, 72.6 and 74.4. The boat did not porpoise and I guess I was in the right position in this section of the lake and it just shined. I made only minor changes to the carb from yesterday. I did though, re-torque the head on cylinder 3 because I took it off yesterday afternoon. The midrange punch of these novis are incredible compared to stock. You can get a great feel for it in the rough too. Carl told me these carbs they cost a nut but phocken rock once adjusted properly. I am so glad I listened to you and bought these. Thanks go out to the porting king Lowell Horning at 2-stroke-porting.com carl and fernando for all their help.

Just to be clear on my quote from above about the Advent - I did NOT get any rpm from it. I did not know at the time that I was experiencing a PV problem, so when I used Fercho's Advent for a couple of runs, I thought I was seeing 100 more rpm. I was not - the PV's were acting up.

As far as what Coop said about me not gaining anything from the Advent - he's right. I *may* have gotten some cleaner mid range or low end, but it's frankly hard to tell. I absolutely did not gain a single rpm or tenth of a mph from installing the Advent. In fact, I really dislike the surging from the PV's rapidly opening. All in all, it was absolutely not worth the $500. Looking back, my ProTec modded stocker worked just fine. I know everyone out there has different experiences - these are mine.

Ditto on Fullboogies report on the Advent. It probably gives better accelleration and holds the valves open in rough water vs. stock but I didn't see anything on top either. I hated the powervalves surging too.

My Advent is sitting on my bookshelf since my gas isn't always fresh.

My best speed numbers have been with the stock ignition, but the ignition didn't influence that. They are equal on top in smooth water.
