My '97 GP1200 keeps cutting out on me when I'm driving, and completely stalling out. I bought a new battery, so I eliminated that being the problem. I'm thinking it may be the stator or CDI. It isn't pulling full RPMs, and will just cut out, out of nowhere. It will only turn about 6500rpm at WOT. The trip gauge will read zero when I can get it restarted too. What is wrong with my ski???

I'd check your grounds first; on the engine and in the electronics box. The resetting of the trip guage makes me think it wouldn't be the stator or CDI, but rather some kind of surge or short.
Maybe your guages are on their way out? There is a way to bypass the guages so that you can rule them out. Hopefully somebody else will have some better answers, but that's where I would start. |

Run a good ground from the front cover back to the battery as superd says. My 98 xl was doing all sorts of wierd stuff and it turned out to be the ground. I got a nice thick ground cable 60" long from napa and ran it from the front cover bolt back to the battery and I havnt had a problem.
Superd thanks for that exhaust!! Your aces with me. Thank you 05 red and white raptor Alba pipe kit K&N air cleaners rejetted. 05 blue raptor same as above 05 raptor 80 white brothers pipe and rejetted Tripple piped GPR XL1200 IF ITS BUILT IN CALIFORNIA, iTS FASTER THAN ANYTHING MADE IN TEXAS!!! |

I'll try a better ground cable. Also, I was wondering if you guys think it could be related to the solenoid??? Doesn't about everything electrical go through the starter solenoid???

Chuck --- had a similar problem on my GP 1200 and I had to eventually replace the stator assembly.

Narrowing the band of where, it sounds definite electrical. From battery to stator. It might be the stator breaking contact intermittently or ground contacts in the electrical box. Start with thorough cleaning of battery contacts, especially ground.
Open up electrical box and pull all ground contacts to box off and sandpaper clean, re-attach. Follow all wiring to front cover and make sure of tight connections. Remove front cover and ohm out pulsar. Visually inspect the electrics, sometimes you can actually see a break developing. The stator assemblies do go down before other electrics. Don't forget spark plug wire inspection, it could also be a coil problem, but stator usually goes before they do. '01 1300 BB w/ triples, Special K porting, PistonWash tuning...85.2 mph. |

I'm gonna check all of that stuff out. My dad did a compression check yesterday, and said it pulled 155psi/100psi/50psi from front to rear. We didn't tear it apart yet, but I think it is just o-rings in the head. He said it didn't look hurt on the pistons or cylinders from what he could see, but again we'll have to tear it down to see. It is acting like an electrical problem though. Maybe the low compression is just a seperate issue too. This thing is really making me mad now.
