I'm sure that this has been aswered a thousand times but not having hours to read all of the old post here, this is my question. What does this consist of. Do you need to buy parts or is this just a "silicone" thing. Thanks

If you are new to this forum, you better be very careful putting the bolts back into the hull inserts. Clean the bolts real good before inserting. Do not overtighten are you will have trouble which will make you wonder why you bought a Yamaha. Poor Poor design.

No special tools that i know of. But you may want a torque wrench so that you dont over tighten the bolts.

Listen to what I am about to say. I hope you have not sealed your pump according to the pics yet. I have problems with the hull inserts to the pump shoe because of the following reason and probably is the cause for most of the hull insert problems you read about if you do the search. If you cover your pump with all that silicone that is in the picture, what do you think happens when you press it to your hull? It spreads out into the bolt hole. Then what happens? Most people put the bolts thru the hole into the hull, and what do you think happens? The bolts drag the silicone into the hull inserts and utlimatly locks up. Well, If you do not have to take the pump shoe off anymore you are okay. Well, I had damage in the pump area that required the pump shoe to come off. What do you think all that silicone did? It assisted in breaking the inserts loose because the bolts were locked in. If you put in the rubber pieces of the pump shoe kit. You only need a fraction of the silicone, basically on the upright diagonal on the side and back of the shoe and at the very front of the shoe. DO NOT PUT ALL THAT SILICONE AROUND THE BOLT HOLE IF YOU THINK YOU MAY TAKE THE PUMP SHOE OFF LATER. Period.

I beg to differ.
a little silicon is nothing compaired to thread sealer they use at the factory. If you take a dremmel tool and carefully grind out the glue they use to hold the insert to the hull, you'll notice that the base of the insert is hex shaped like a bolt. The hull has a spot molded in the same shape. It's like making a socket out of fiberglass, it's going to strip out the flats. so when you spin an insert what has happened isthat you've striped the fiberglass that holds the flats of the insert. Grind all that old crap out and reseat the inserts with JB Weld. |

I would not go so far as 3stangs suggests, but I can tell you that the 5200 that Fercho suggests is tougher than any thread sealant the factory or dealer uses. I would never use 5200 or 4200 on this. These are marine adhesives and a good below the waterline silicone like BoatLife will provide the desired results. |

I agree with JetEd.
The 4200 and 5200 is not nearly as solid as the the threadlock that came from the factory. The real problem when you seal your pump shoe is the 5200 gets into the hull inserts and block the screw from turning all the way in. That is how most snap the bolts. A way to keep from doing this is to put a piece of tape the size of a dime and cover the inserts and then when you get the shoe all lined up, push the bolt thru the tape into the insert. This way you won't get silicon into the insert. Also use locktite blue or pipe joint compound (best). |
