Background info:
Stock 2001 GP1200r w/ rebuilt engine w/ less than 15 hours. It has been sitting under the cover for 8 months while I was away on deployment and my friend never cranked it like I asked. Problem: The engine turns over no problem. However, it never fires. The plugs are not fouled and look wet. I checked all spark plug wires and spark plugs and they all fire. My thoughts: I suspect that the carbs and the reeds are probably gummed up with varnish. I've already removed part of the exhaust so I can get at the carbureators. Should I buy carb rebuild kits (total hours on the craft is less than 125)? There is fresh fuel and fresh Ring Free in the tank now. Will the reeds stand up to carb cleaner? |

Stock Reeds are pretty tough, but if you have gone to the work of removing your exhaust, I would unbolt your carbs, and have them rebuilt. When I did this, I had them rejetted, too. It really woke up my GPR which only had 50 hrs. on it but a lot of hours of old fuel in it.

Okay, I got the carbs off and I have one tore down almost completely. I didn't remove the jets. I'm not sure what type of Mikuni carbs are the stock ones. I'll be calling Riva this morning to figure it out.
You mentioned rejetting the carbs. What would you recommend? Also, I've been thinking about getting the flame arrestors from Riva. I was thinking it would be a lot easier to use these instead of bolting the stock air box back up. |
