Has anyone ever heard of this? I had a reputable builder(one that has been mentioned here and NOT SBT) T&R my crank and 2 of the welds have a crack. Is this ok, or do I run the risk of damage? Here is the first weld:

The Second weld:

The back sides of all the pins are welded without cracks:

What do you think. The builder (recomended by this board) states they are ok.

Builder needs to learn to weld IMHO. I'll let others comment on how much you should worry about those cracks. Not as worryfree as crackfree that's for sure. Razz

The cracks shouldn't be taken lightly. Probably applied too much heat. You should have them repaired asap.

Now that I've seen the pics, Yikes! Yup, get that fixed. That's crap. Shoot, it's already trued. I would consider even just taking it to a GOOD, reputable, local welder who's comfortable working on precision machinery with TIG.

I'm but a humble welding student with only about 50 hours experience so I might not know what the hell I'm talking about when I say that it looks to me the opposite of what Riva Crew said. It looks like the welder was trying to make a pretty weld and didn't add enough heat and get enough penetration. Plus he might have made a bad choice on the filler material. Anybody here know what alloys are used for the crank web and pins? That would be good information to pass along to the welder so he can make an educated choice of appropriate filler material to use.

Just to let everyone know... I had the crank re-welded... So much for Pro-Tec quality... Be Careful. I am out an extra $45 because of it.

Wow. The welds Pro-Tec did on my GP1200 crank were fine. I can't believe they passed that off as good.
