Last summer my procrastination finally caught up to me on my 2001 GP1200 R and the oil line came loose and number three had a lean seizure. Instead of just fixing number three I did a complete top end rebuild with Pro-X pistons and rings, and rebuilt the carbs, went to pre-mix and added a primer pump. Everything went smooth and the assembled engine passed the pressure testing etc with flying colors. I filled the tank with pre mix running extra rich and set the carbs per some of the postings here.

The engine was stock at the time of the rebuild only the cat had been removed. I took the ski out for beak in and everything was going good, I was running it 1/4 throttle and less while varying the throttle and finally began to run it 1/2 to three quarters after the first tank. All went well and all of the sudden it started acting up, I removed the seat and the engine compartment was filled with exhaust, it turns out I did not tighen the clamp around the muffler rubber boot at the end of the exhaust where it meets the muffler. I reattached the coupling and went for a ride but the ski was still loosing power, I shut it down and chekc the compression and number three was dead!

I pulled the head and the rings are toast, There is a gouge in the cylinder wall at the exhuast port both above and below and the piston in this area is pretty torn up. The piston and cylinder are bnot near as damaged as the the first seizure and I am at a loss for the cause. It appears to me like maybe I spun a ring but with the new pro-x piston and rings I feel like that would be rare. I guess it could be a lean seizure but both the #1 & #2 cylinders look good, Iknow the settings are different for #3 but I figured if the setting I found were good for 1 & 2 the setting for three should have been good. Any thoughts? Can a ring spin just as easy with the pro-x pistons and rings? How do you prevent this from happening?

I have attached pictures but they are not great. Its hard to get sa good pic of the cylinder wall.

just use a C piston in 3

the difference between a 15 and 18 cylinder is very small (negligible)

not sure on your on your failure cause maybe Riva or someone else can help

are you using waveeater clips on the PVs?

Yes I have the clips on the PV. Even with all the damage (you can see bits of rings stuck in the piston dome) the PV came out sithout a nick or scratch which kind surprises me.

I am not sure what the coloration on the piston is, it occur on all three of the pistons.

I am trying to find the write up I printed from the forum when I was setting up the carbs after the rebuild so I can provide thes specs. I know I set up the #3 cylinder to run a little risher than the 1 & 2 but other than the color they seem to be ok. Cylinder walls look good. Could the rubber muffler seal giving way have caused it to run lean?

It looks like the deposits from sugar. Ask station were you get your fuel how much ethanol is in there fuel. It takes more fuel the more the ethanol. Just a thought
1 and 2 have a good wash but 3 is lean.

First, I know nothing about skis. But just purchased a couple used skis and one has the same issue. I thought about just replacing the cylinder. And then went ahead and pulled the whole engine. I am guessing you pulled your engine and cleaned out the fragments in the crank bearings.

how about the crank out of deflection, and has gone advanced on the rear cyld, or a oil injection check valve that is bad or stopped up or has poped off, or a dirty carb on that cyld that has starved that cyld ,, or a bad powervale that has dropped
