quote: In a nut shell the water box performs two main tasks. One, it's primary task, is muffling sound. The second, it creates the proper amount of backpressure as determined by the manufacturer for the engine to perform optimally in it's stock form. Water is introduced into the exhaust system (at different points for different systems) for cooling, tuning and noise reduction. In their stock configuration water boxes have a series of baffles inside. These baffles, along with water, do most of the work. With an aftermarket water box the baffling is reduced and the overall shape is often changed as well. That's not to say that by installing just an aftermarket water box in a stock craft you will see an overall performance gain. You may notice improved acceleration, but you will more than likely notice a reduction in top-end. That is unless you do other modifications to compensate for this. The amount of water introduced into the water box plays a significant roll in determing the performance characteristics. A dried out water box allows exhaust gases to escape faster, thus improving acceleration. However you will lose top-end speed. And vice-versa. Factory Pipe Products introduced an aftermarket water box/hull exit system for the GP1200R/1300R that utilizes water injection to obtain improved performance in all areas. Initially the water box is dried out (only enough water is introduced to keep things cool and not completely kill engine performance). At a certain RPM after initial take-off the tuner can set the control unit to add water improving top-end speed. More water means more back pressure. It changes the tuning of the entire exhaust system. However, this system is designed for highly modified craft (triple pipes, increased compression, porting, etc.) quote: The only certain gain without knowing your exact set-up, riding style, etc that I can comment on is acceleration. By drying out the water box you won't have as much water to evacuate enabling exhaust gases to escape faster. However, you will more than likely notice a loss in top-end. As I stated before, you can do other modifications to compensate for this. Hopefully you have a better idea of what your water box is doing for you with that inforamtion! I probably missed a point or two. And I'm sure there are going to be a few that don't completely agree with the above. I tried to explain it as best I could.... We haven't set up a craft using Fercho's water routing so I can't say which is better. But, from what I've read on our forums, it would appear that his mod works.
Use the "Find " feature on our forums to search for posts about the modification. You can also use our private messaging feature to contact Fercho directly if you have questions. He is very helpful and knowledgable.RIVA CREW Please post and ride responsibly!!! |

can a water box stop working properly and if so how do I know if a water bos it's working right
|

There's nothing mechanical to a water box so I don't see how one could "stop working". It is possible that it is cracked internally or one of the baffles has broken free.
When modifying a water box yourself it is possible to hurt performance by either reducing or increasing back pressure through baffle or shpape changes. What are you getting at? Is your craft not running right? RIVA CREW Please post and ride responsibly!!! |
