ok guys im new here but heres what i want to know....i am in the market for a waverunner. my buddy just bought a 2001 ultra 150 with an aftermarket prop but everything else is stock. I want to spank his ski so my question is this. i was originally looking at buying a 1999 gp1200 with a stage 2 kit, but i was told the fastest that boat or any 97,98, or 99 gp will ever go is like 70 (due to hull design)but a stage 2 gpr 1200 like a 2000 model and up will go 85 easy. is this true and if so has anybody ridden the 2 and which bike do you prefer for ultimate top end speeed? thanx ahead of time.....and i posted this as a poll last time sorry, like i said im new to this and meant it as a discussion

Welcome to our forums! The GP's of old served us well so I have a soft spot for them. But, the GPR's are definitely better. Everything we did to the GP's to make them so dominate in the late 90's was put into the GPR's. To this day the GPR is still a top choice for the hard core enthusiasts. They're even going as far as putting Supercharged Sea•Doo 4-TEC engines in GPR's to get more speed.

If you have the choice, and money, the GPR platform is the way to go.

thanx, yeah, ive found both a 1998 gp with a stage 2 kit on it (one of bubbas old ski's) for $2200 and i found a 2000 gpr with a stage 2 kit on it for $4000. both are single pipe machines and both seem to be awesome boats but for sheer top end speed i think im gonna go with the gpr....now abviously either one of these machines should be faster than a stock ultra 150 right? and i assume the gpr should be able to hang with the newer turbocharged seadoo and kawi etc. models?

The Ultra 150's are fast. But, they have a tendency to do their own thing sometimes in rough conditions. One minute you're ripping along and the next you're swimming and your Ultra is going the other way. Same with the older GP's. It was a little easier to prevent with the GPs's though. GPR's are very steady. Their only issue is porposing. Which is pretty easy to remedy as well.

To keep up with the new 255hp Supercharged RXP-X you will need a very healthy GPR. Especially if it has just our grate, prop and nozzle! Stock they run a solid 65mph. Put our grate, prop and nozzle on and you're over 70mph. With the GPR it takes a little more than that. But, it's doable.

A well tuned GP1200R will beat an Ultra 150 on the top and hang with a RXP-X on the top, but both these skis will hole shot this GPR all day long.
Now you can find a 1300R for a little more than a 1200R and with a good amount of mods you can walk away from both skis on top but the 2 skis will still pull you out of the hole. In my opinion, the 150 in stock form has a hole shot that only a RXP or RXPX can beat. The X hole shot is unreal!
I have owned the 150, 1200r, 1300r and rode and raced against the RXP X. I really like the X but it is too much money for me and I am still too much of a Yamaha nut to jump the fence.
For the money, a well tuned 1300R is the way to go. Thousands less than an X and alot more ski than the others. Oh, and if you ride in rough water, the 150 will wear you down.
Just my .02.
Good luck.

I owned an Ultra 150 before I got a GPR and the easiest way to beat an Ultra 150 is to race the guy in choppy water.

A Stage II GPR will definitely smoke an Ultra 150 that's stock, but will languish in the holeshot. Find a Stage II GPR, and the Jetworks is a cheap, easy and effective holeshot mod to keep within reach of an Ultra 150.
