I have 215+ hours on my '01 GP1200R, and recently my trim stopped working. When I trim my ski up or down, it doesn't do a thing and when I try to trim it all the way to the top or bottom notch, it doesn't let me turn it that far (without a ton of force at least.) I know for a fact that my cables aren't broken---when I take out the front storage bucket and look at the trim wheel, everything looks great except that the cable no longer moves when I trim the ski. Also, with someone holding the trim in, I can move the back exhaust up/down without much effort. With that in mind, is this an easy repair and if so, how would I go about doing it? Lastly, I have fairly new plugs (about 4-5 hours use on them) but they look a bit rusty/gunked up on the outside after storing my ski for the winter. With that in mind, should the plugs still be just fine or should I look at replacing them just to be safe?
Thanks in advance for your help. |

Definitely replace the plugs. The minor expense will save you a lot of headaches later.
As for the QSTS more than likely the cables inside the cable housings are corroded. They swell up causing them to bind against the inner liner. Disconnect one end or the other from the trim wheel where they meet and see which set is giving you trouble and replace them. From what you've posted it appears your GPR was exposed to a lot of moisture while it was stored. Is that the case? Was it winterized? Just to be on the safe side I suggest you check over everything else carefully to make sure no other problems pop up while you're riding. RIVA CREW Please post and ride responsibly!!! |

I sort of winterized---I filled the gas tank up completely, sprayed down everything with silicone spray, nickel charged the battery once a month or so, and kept it completely enclosed indoors as well. Anything else you'd recommend I'd do before taking it out this weekend (such as fogging, oiling the holes where the spark plugs go, etc) would be appreciated. Lastly, I also had my ski serviced last fall (the last time I rode) as well---the carbs were cleaned, etc. I also started the ski and it seems to run/sound great.

Storing it indoors in Florida won't prevent moisture unless the room is climate controlled (a/c'd or a dehumidified). The humidity and changing temperatures will create moisture. The combination of water getting into the cables over time and then it sitting for a while is the likely cause of the problem.
Fogging the engine isn't necessary unless you're storing it for a while or you know there was water injestion. Running it will lubricate all the internal moving parts. You should consider purging all of the fuel and replacing it with fresh fuel. I know that's expensive advice, but the fuel that has been sitting in there has lost octane and is more than likely going bad. Those two factors can cause a much more expensive problem.
