I am waiting for a new power valve servo motor to arrive. Mine has totally stopped working.
HAVE to use the ski this week. I am on holiday, and there is huge swell on the ocean and big surf.
Should I maually open or close the valves? Probably will not see W.O.T. in these seas, and am after holeshot, so I would guess leave them closed.
Would there be a problem running flat out with the valves closed?
Thanks

may i suggest you stay put till you change that servo. especially in big water where the last thing you want is for your motor to stall. dont ride in the surf if your equiptment is not in top order!

I rode for the better part of an afternoon with my PV's manually closed - all it does is limit your top end. If you're jumping waves, I don't see any reason why you can't run it that way.

I hate winter...

I would use you rpm's as the indicator for safe or not safe. You don't want to be running low rpms for too long.

Ya its cool to run it like that I did for about 3 weeks, not sure what postion the values were in though. The sad part is I didnt really see a big performance change with them working or not. o well

If you must go out, set the PVs for fully closed. If they're open at all you'll lose bottom end, and if they're fully opened you'd be better off putting on flippers and swimming your ski up wave faces. But whatever you do, ski with a buddy.

I disagree smackwave, the lo end loss is not so drastic as to make the boat unrideable, while riding with the valves closed could cause the rpm limitations to have the boat dangerously close to extended riding around the "lean spot' of the carb, which will absolutely cause a seizure. If you keep the revs up by pumping the throttle constantly you can control your low end limitations. However I would be a good boy and wait for the boat to be 100% to ride in big swells as any kind of mechanical problem at the wrong time in those conditions could be fatal.

When PV's open they also lower compression. A WOT run with the valves closed could result in detonation problems. However - I have also ran with them disconnected (forgot to reconnect the switch after checking compression) and not immediately suffered the consequences. I'd vote for the "good boy" approach too - a mistake is too expensive.

....well to ride in the waves I think you will need them closed - low end with them open is "really" bad

I've run waves when my PV servo failed wide open. Trust me, you'll notice it. If you come off plane it takes forever to get back up to speed. I'd rather have low end punch than approach a wave at speed.

There's no worries about the 3/4-7/9 throttle lean spot with the PVs closed. You'll be running in about the same RPM range, sure, but the carbs will still be dumping the full throttle ratio of fuel into the mix.

Maybe this should be more of a "what to do if the PV servo fails en route" discussion. I gotta agree with others, if anything is wrong don't go out surf jumping.

Took it out in the surf yesterday- No problems at all.
The power valves were closed, and to be honest, the ski did not feel any different.
For curiosity, I had a 3-4 minute wide open run on the only bit of flatish water on the way back to the slipway.
Ski was pulling 7050 rpm, and the plugs after a chop were nice and rich looking.
I am down about 150-200 rpm though. P.S, I have re jetted, with flame arrestors, and dissabled the accelerator pump.
