My GP800 engine recently failed due to rear rod bearing failure at the crankshaft. I recently bought the ski and it has the Yamaha Extended Service (YES) warranty good for until next year. About 20 hrs ago the ski had a powervalve failure on the same cylinder and Yamaha replaced the cylinder and piston under warranty. The dealer who did the first repair said the stress placed on the bearing from the PV failure probably caused the current failure. The local dealer said shadow marks on other internal parts show water damage. Yamaha is denying repair. It took a month for them to tell me this.

I've talked to customer service several times (relates to about 20 hours on hold getting through) and they say tough. The RTA has offered 1000 assistance as policy. The repair is 3300. Pricing out a GP800 through individual parts comes out to about $30,000. So in giving me 1000 credit (only towards this repair), Yamaha still makes a hefty profit on the parts and the local dealer still gets his labor.

Rumor has it that Yamaha is cracking down on warranty costs due to economy. Deny must be standard policy.

Before you buy call customer service (you won't get through). Think twice before buying Yamaha or the YES program.

Anyone interested in a 99 GP800 with a year left on warranty (has warranty but your claim will be denied).
