I just bought a new GP1200R and this is the first weekend that I have had it out logged about 4 hours or so and already having problems.

In about 2 hours it was bogging down from idle it didnt want to come up on plane. While already on plane or moving about say 15 mph throttle response was great only from a stop did it want to bog almost stalling a few times. So I checked the spark plugs sure enuff really fouled up (dirt bike term don't know if you use it on ski's really gunked up) So I swapped them out with my new spares completely fixed the problem. So I thought I was good to go.

About hour number 4 same problem but alot worse while at idle and punching the throttle to get on plane it would stall completly. Tried to change the spark plugs with the old ones I cleaned up with carb cleaner and then gas soaked. It was even worse.

Any thoughts, opinions, or guesses on what might be recking my plugs or causing it to stall only from idle. I'm kinda new to the jet ski thing worked on my own 2 stroke dirt bike for a while so I know a little bit about the engine. Thanx in advance

Josh

Generally the dealer will add extra into the first tank of gas, to assist with break-in. The is will always cause you to run rich in the beginning.

JSTYLE , because you just bought your ski there are some things you should know about the gpr./...first off the oil in your gas is going to cause you to foul out plugs ....this can take 10 hours or more to completely lean out ....second:the gpr is kind of sluggish out of the hole anyway ......you may also want to chechk the manufature date of the ski....it may have been sitting in the show room for a while.....about the stalling ..take it back to dealer and get catalytic converter removed and get a d-plate ....also a riva pump plug kit !!!!!

It is a 2001 and it was hot (oil and gas in it_ so it has been in the show room for a LONG time..... could that be the reason? Also I know that it has horrible hole shot but it shouldn't be stalling right. What is a D-plate and will the dealer remove the cat for me? And also what is the plug kit?

honostly it could be a number of reasons though it may be that the carbs need to be tweeked or due to gas sitting in tank/carbs (dont know if it was used)it could be bad gass!!! overheating is contributed by the cat conv and will lead to other probs ........get it removed asap worth it in the long run Wink

But if it was bad gas wouldn't it be bogging down at all R's? Also if gas and oil was sitting in the carb I should have had the problem right away right? One more question I looked on Riva's site and I could not find the Plug kit where is it at????

I wouldn't start changing things yet till you sort out the problem. The mods mentioned are good just don't do them until the problem is solved. The cat and lack of pump plug kit is not causing this problem.

Best plugs are BR8ES-11, only available from Yamaha dealer. They come gapped - check to make sure gap is correct.

Any chance the gas in the tank is old, after 4 hours I am assuming you are now using fresh gas. If not drain the old stuff - I use my wife's car for old gas.

As mentioned it could simply be the dealer added extra oil to the tank.

Try new gas and new plugs. If problem persists take it back to the dealer - trying to troubleshoot a ski is a real pain - let the dealer do it.

The GPR may load up a bit when idling, a blip on the throttle should clean it up. The exhaust water box also fills up when idling, this will slow down off idle response. But in general, if you haven't been idling for an extended period, throttle response should be clean - anything less - you have a problem.

after you get your problem sorted out take a look at what jskGPR has done to his ski - this would be a good place to start if you wanted to improve it's perf Smile

One question you have to ask yourself is do you want to keep the ski under warranty? There are major improvements to be made while accomplishing this, but a lot of dealers will not honor the warranty if you go to a d-plate or install a free flow exhaust. Something to consider...

jstyle, the sensor chip for the d-plate is required so that your ski will change the overheating levels because the temp. of the ski will be lower than w/ the cat conv in place, also will fake out ski to think cat is still there and working properly so no alarm will sound ...in basic terms Wink .....about the pump plug kits RIVA sells them ..look on the pref. catalog under pump and handeling..........d-plate all the way Big Grin there may be some performance difference in the bottom to mid range w/ plate not much on top end though but the benefits of it far exceed the minor differnces in speed in my opinion......free flow is a mixed opinion....some say non beneficial unless you have a aluminium head w/ 150psi 92 oct.....although others seem to think it also helps out bottom and mid range pull w/o head ....personally i did free flow for about $5.00 (clamps and pvc ) i like the sound for one but think hard b-4 doing it, there are many post about iT check out the search engine Big Grin
