The key word here is CORRECTLY, that is what you asked MD.

Diamond hone is the ONLY hone that will do the job correctly.
Will a dingle berry hone cut new crosshatch? NO
How do I know...because I tried it many times? It looks like it is cutting the chrome but all your seeing is mostly residue from the stones. Measure it, you’ll see you haven’t removed any material not even .001”unless you reamed on it for 1/4 hour, probably creating taper and out of round. Next time you have ball honed a chrome cyl.clean it up as best you can then put it next to a diamond honed or new or replated cyl.Now look at the differance. The crosshatch on the ball honed cly is light and not deep you have actually removed crosshatch not cut any. The diamond honed cly has deep distinct crosshatch patterns. This is what it takes for rings to seat and then seal to their full potential. This distinct crosshatch pattern is measured in RMS.There are different RMS finishes that the ring manufactures want for their rings to seat quickly and fully. There is no way a dingle berry hone can make the proper RMS finish on a chrome cly.
Will a dingle ball hone do this?
Deglazes
Remove taper
Straightens an out of round cylinder

A diamond hone will do all the above.

Will a chrome cly work after it is ball honed.Yes, it will run.
Will it last as long? No.
Will it have blow-by? Yes.
Will it perform as good as a cly CORRECTLY honed? Not a chance.
Can you win races with a ball honed cly? YES.

Just my opinion, however
I think you will find that many well respected people who deal with chrome cly all the time feel the same way. Try talking to US Chrome they are the chrome cly experts.

Aren't the cylinders NICASIL????? NOt CHROME????

First of all I am an American Citizen, second why the **** am I being responsible for what some corrupt idiots did. That is GP12TRPL department

If we take a poll here you would not like the results. I hear that you had some German in you at one time. ......About 8 inches.

For someone to take my side or agree with me because thay are my friends or because we like Yamaha's would be stupid. I think common sense is the reason why they agree.

TIGER some people refer to them as chrome because they are actuallu plated, but you are correct thay are not chrome.

You make some very good points.. I am hoping that I don't have a problem with what I've done. My cylinders still had most of the cross-hatch very visible except up near the top of the cylinder where it appeared to be oil glazed and/or have some blowby. Hopefully the ball hone did remove the glaze and will allow the original cross-hatch to provide sufficient ring sealing. I will run a compression test after 25 or so hours and most likely assess ring blow-by to determine if the rings have formed a good seal.

If time would have permited, I would have sent them out to be professional honed using a diamond hone as you and some others have mentioned.

Also unfortunately this thread is becoming instruemental for other purposes besides the topic at hand. Fercho, in my opinion, you do not even need to respond to these provocations. I think you've earned a very respectable position in my mind and many others. I too know that it can be very difficult to sit on the side lines and not commment when someone undermines you abilities, especialy when all your contributions and intentions are for the benefit of forum members.

Ele,, please give it a rest on this thread. If you feel it necessary to continue, start a new thread and battle there. The other details of correctly honing in this thread may help someone down the road when they do a search about honing GPR cylinders. Thanks.

Thanks Fercho

If you feel it necessary to wipe this entire thread into the garbage I can do that also.

Let me know.

Sorry to butt in ...

I have spoken to Fercho on a few occasions. He's been very helpful. We talked about how and why he immigrated to America and becoming a US citizen. He's proud to be an American, he works hard and he speaks english. I am glad to have him here.

It shouldn't even be coming up in this topic let alone..this website.

And Frewman, go to your room. You sure can't give advise. A man who owns a multimillion $$$ company and only riding an 800, and wasting money on aftermarket parts to make it faster. Ha Ha

I have a company and I'm proud of it. I only have 1 ski right now because I don't have a ton of time to really get into the sport. The 800 was the first ski I have ever bought. When I purchased it someone told me not to buy a 1200r at the time because they were so slow out of the hole. I went with the 800 and I'm very happy with it. I guess your saying since I have some money I should have a 1200r correct? That makes a lot of sense. I really do think you should attend some anger management classes and get yourself some help for your racial discrimination. That's not cool and I don't like it so don't come to me for anything. P.S. I owned a used 01 1200r and I sold it over the winter. You are a very strange man.

Hey MD maybe take the good info and paste it into a new thread and then have Riva lock it or have Riva Guy/Crew/Master or **** get Dave Bamdas to just edit this freaking disaster of a thread..

Sorry I flew off the handle at points but my anger management counselor and also Immigration officer told me that it is best to voice my opinion rather than beat the living crap out of someone.... Go figure.. Violence usually calms me down but this Elfy twit is really ******* me off..

Mike - please accept my apologies for what I'm about to post. I also recommend you take the good info on honing here and repost on a different thread, then lock it so just the good stuff stays there...

ELF and Tiger - Not sure what your problem is, but you have a lot to learn about disagreeing with someone in a manner. Anyone can start SH1T, but it takes serious to be able to tell someone they are screwed up and have them laughing about it...

It never amazes me how people grow big bold balls when their sitting behind a key board and not face to face with the person they're getting stupid with...If you really have something to say, put your real name to it so when everyones around the worlds or some other big event, everyone knows who you are...

Fercho - Its all about contribution - I'm all for anyone from anywhere being able to immigrate to America as long as they are contributing to Americas well being and positive growth. You my friend, have done more than your fair share, and I am grateful. I'd be proud to stand next to you and wave the flag...

p.s. The ref to mario had me laughing my *** off - that was soo funny...
