I want to put aftermarket bars on my stock GP1200R
steering stem, mainly to get a smaller O.D. grips.
Question is can I simply mount aftermarket bars on the stem? I do have a umi throttle finger lever. I have a auto drop so I dont need the manual trim part. I realize some will tell me to get the UMI steering stem but I dont have the money for it right now.

with auto-drop this is easy to do - one of the first mods I did to my ski

get new bars and new grips - any motocross shop will have a wide selection

there are some bars that reduce arm pump - Fercho and others have posted on them

make sure you wire or zip tie the end of the grip closest to the stem to make sure the grips don't come off.

get bars with a cross bar and a foam safety pad - don't want to lose any teeth

Mick you should be able to do this with the stock stem and take advantage of the taper bars.

You will need a set of universal taper mount adapters and a taper handlebar.

Back in my mountain biking days hair spray worked great for making the grips stay put.

I personnaly use paint to make my grips (Specialized brand MTB grips) stay put and it works great, it's not as thick a glue so it's easy to work with but still sticks strong enough.
About the bars, any non tappered bars will bolt on a stock GPR stem, just remember proper padding is very important if you don't wear an helmet all the time.

Thank You Fercho!!!! I have been wanting to go to a taperbar but didnt want to spring for the UMI steering and fat head coversion. I read this post this morning and went to the Cycle shop, bought a TAG conversion kit and taperbar. Until today I wasnt aware there was a conversion kit. Thanks again. PS, have pics and will send if someone wants them. Im going to put them it into a Powerpoint slide show, step by step with descriptions, if someone would like that also.

The best brand of grip of get is the ODI Lock Jaw by far. These are great cause you don't have to use any adhesive, they use locks on the ends of the grips to clamp them to the bar. It makes removing the grips a very easy task. Grips are also dual compound for long life and reduced vibration. I swear by them on my Mountain Bike!!

Actually,
I've been real happy over the years with Sea-Poo grips. The only downside it that you have to drill a small hole on each side of the bar for the inner plastic piece to lock in. After that, no glue, no nuttin.

Cost is about $10, and they last forever. The texture is close to the gpr grips. You can change out the grips with new seapoo grips with a 10mm socket, and about 2 minutes tops.

Thanks for the info Fercho. Looks like you have the OURY grips? I have them on my quad and use to have them on my streetbike. I do like your setup and thats what im looking for minus the UMI part cause of cash flow.

I quit using OURY's on my street bike.. They are too tacky when warm. There great on my Quad but I didnt like em on the RZ streetbike.

How do they hold up with the water on the ski?

Is there a certain diameter of bars to attach the stock trim adjustment and switches or are they pretty much standard size, and also which throttle trigger is best for rec. riding straight or angle pull. Thanks,

Quickmick,
Yes you can get diff colors of the bars. I saw silver, gold, black, blue. Plus two companies make the design. Pro-Taper, and Tag. I think the tag adaptors are about half the price of the Protapers, and come with a pad. I like the adaptor, instead of shaving it down, due to the height.

You will also need to visit the local hardware shop and get all your hardware converted to stainless.

The CR-high bar, was a close match to stock height.

I'll give my ride opinion of them later.
