I just recently blew the moter in my 99 XL1200, which i have no idea why it happened since Yamaha's have such good engines). I blew a cylinder, cylinder head, and a piston. The metal spread throughout the engine. I found out the oil injecter got clogged and wasn't lubricating the cylinder. I was just going to buy the parts i needed (piston, cylinder, and cylinder head) and put them in, but after talking to some people i decided not to do that cause metal particles have probably spread throughout the engine. But anyway, I was just wondering if I should get a rebuilt engine because the new ones are way to much $$$. Could someone tell me if the rebuilt engines are a good thing to look into or not. I would also be getting a warranty on that engine. I would also like it if anyone had any other suggestions too.

Know any good mechanics in your area who can tear it apart, clean it, and verify no further damage occured?

NOw that I think about it, did you drop a power valve and thats what took out your cylinder. TYhe metal particals should only be in the damaged cylinder area. The crank is sealed between cylinders for intake charge purposes so unless you took out a seal, the damge should be localized.

Depending on how many hours he may want to disassemble, have crank tue and welded and reassemble.I heard of oil pump lines check valves failing. Thats why I went Premix

Premix eliminates oil pump/line failures for sure.

if you go about fixing it yourself you may want to have the crank bearings checked under the cylinder that didn't get any lubrication. The bearings and crank could be shot also. This adds a significant cost to the overhaul.

I think, based on what you mentioned caused the problem, I would check into a rebuilt..

To be honest its not even a hassle once you get use to it. You eliminate any a bunch of hoses, and finally get rid of the side draft oil drip that the 66v suffers from, but most important you will never have to worry about failure due to lubrication.

It is amazing how many problems I hear about and read about regarding 1200 motors, specifically Power Valves and Cat Con. I have a 1200 that is loosing top end but I do not think I have dropped metal in cyl based on PVs breaking up. I only use Yamalube like dealers says and properly maintain. I am VERY disappointed in this machine. Sure the mods can fix it but for aggressive rec riders who cannot afford high maint the 1200 XLT should be avoided. I have 35 hours, perfect cosmetics on the ski.I would love to dump this one but I fear it carries a very low resale. Any offers (trailer and new sponsons installed) Yamaha cover.
