those of you that have installed a stage 1 kit from riva, in a xlt 1200, by riva's instructions, do you have any success and or horror stories to tell? if so please do. i just had a tragidy with mine and after going thru it with the local machinist, it is starting to look like this kit is not really dialed in right. looking to do some homework on it so when i get it back together , it will be right. thanks for any and all help! We were talking earlier about jetting and getting my rpm’s right, anyway I did a compression test and had none in #2!! Tore it down and took my jugs to our #1 machinist for this area. I learned a lot there!!! Appears that pre ignition was the cause. Now for determining the pre ignition, he feels that the stage one impeller is too tall and loaded the motor to much. He is suggesting to jet up a bit and to bore out the nozzle. Also learned that Yamaha has been sending out these motors way loose and even sometimes out of specs!!!, straight from the factory!!! Also appears that this stage 1 riva kit is not dialed in. and there technical assistance is at the very least, vague. The more I dig and learn the more Yamaha and riva look bad. Really disappointing cause I am a big fan of Yamaha.

Hey sprink701,
Did you have a Tach to see what your exact peak RPM's were? If indeed your impeller was too tall or your carbs were dialed in incorreclty, you could have used a Tach to observe that.

Problems:
- Impeller too tall, the RPM's would have been below 7,000
- Carbs dialed in too lean, your RPMS would peak rapidly and lower slowly.

Either way, if your carbs were too lean, then you would have had a problem b4 the Stage 1, unless the steeper impeller gave it the extra push.
