Was wondering if anyone knows the answer. I did to many mods at once and cant tell.... I have a friend who wanted to know.
GPR1200 stock ride plate versus a Riva plate with the skegs removed?? This is on a stage 2 boat. Thanks, A.J. [ 06-01-2003, 11:38 PM: Message edited by: efreak ] |

AJ: I would say the aftermarket rideplate gives you 2-2.5 mph over stock. Aftermarket rideplate with skegs removed would yield 3-3.5 over stock. This has been my experience, whereas I have tried both the new Riva plate & with the skegs removed.

Get an aftermarket ride plate and extended trim tabs.
Yes, you will gain a slight speed increase, but much more importantly, it will help reduce/eliminate the porposing tendancies inherent in the GPR hull design. These add-ons are a must!! No doubt about it. |

Thanks guys.... I already have a Riva rideplate with skegs removed. I was just wondering since i have done so many different mods at once.
I run my sponsors stepped with the stock trim tabs, and i really dont have a big porposing problem. Thanks,A.J. |

Mike? Which Plate did you prefer and for what reasons?

AJ - I havent noticed any more porpoising due to removing the skegs. The current plate I have has the skegs ground down about 80% leaving a little bit of a "fin" for handling. I have noticed no speed gains from having the skegs machined completely off vs. machined 80% off. The only difference is with a portion of the skegs left it helps with high speed turning. In either case, compared to the original Riva/R&D plate, you do loose some of the "bite" the skegs provide when doing mid to high speed turning.
My opinion....is for the skegs removed. I accept the slight loss of handling compared to the speed gain. As for using the stock rideplate, I will never go back to it, the gain from replacing it is just too much for me to give up to reduce porpoising (considering the water conditions I ride in). As for the porpoising, its been an issue for me lately, but I'm adding an intake grate, and hopefully will help a bit. Its really all about what you are willing to sacrifice for speed. Originally, I had my ski set up for glass water top speed. Hence the reason for not adding the grate, and keeping the sponsons up. When I rode, I would spend most of my time messing with the trim to eliminate the porpoising. Mike... |
