I have 83 hours on my '00 GP1200R, and I'm wondering if I'm maintaining my ski correctly or if there is something else I should be doing as well? Until now, all I've done is used salt-away after each time I ride (I only ride saltwater), and I spray everything down with silicone before and after everytime I ride. I also do all the other basic stuff to my ski as well (wax my ski, apply marine grease to various parts, change/ clean spark plugs often, keep battery charged, etc).

Now that my ski has a decent number of hours on it, what else should I be doing to ensure my ski runs well for many hours to come? So far, my ski has run perfectly, and I recently had a D plate installed, along with the pump plug kit. Also, should I be looking at replacing anything (fuel filter, etc?) Thanks in advance.

it sounds like your taking good care of your ski. the fuel filter can be checked visually, the trash usually hangs out at the bottom of the filter. the next thing you might have to do it rebuild the carbs. i wouldnt do this until you notice a change in performance. if it becomes hard to start or just seems a little sluggish, it might be time to rebuild your carbs. the kits are around 50 or 60 for each carb i believe. the high and low speed check valves seem to be the first parts in a carb that wear out. the reason i wouldnt rebuild them until you notice a difference in performance is because if its not running bad everything in the carb is still functioning properly. also you might want to start premixing, premixing is a very good prevenative habit to start, it can save your pistons.

sorry for the ignorance, but what is premixing? As for my carbs: my ski is under warranty and the guys at Action Watersports in Bradenton, FL offered to replace my cat con with the D plate for free. I mentioned to them that my ski seemed to have lost some power so they went ahead and rebuilt my carbs for me as well---for free (they somehow made it out to be a warranty repair.) Overall, my ski is running beautifully but I want to try to avoid any/many problems for as long as I can.

you may want to take a visual look with a high power flashlight at your impeller and impeller liner. I think the 00 had a service bulletin out on it to change the liner to the upgraded 01 model if problems were experienced and covered under warranty. My 00 had this problem and Yamaha provided a new pump liner and impeller under warranty.

Premixing is when you mix your oil with the fuel so you dont have to depend on the oil pump . By doing this, you can remove the oil pump from the front of the motor, install a block off plate where it used to be, take out your oil tank and just start mixing the oil with you fuel in a fuel jug. This way....You know the engine is ALWAYS getting oil. All of the Pro's on the National Tour have pre-mix boats. No of them depend on the oil pump (especially with the RPMS and Horsepower they are running). The Superjets and SXI Pro's come from the factory with no oil pumps and you HAVE to premix them. Replacing a motor because of oil pump failure (if you not under warrenty) really SUCKS !!
And as far as your dealer rebuilding your carbs and removing your cat-con with a D plate for free....You got yourself a **** of a GOOD Dealer. GO buy em a round at the local watering hole. Hard to find a dealer willing to do that.
