What 1200 hulls were made of? what did they change in 1300's? Is it stronger or just ligher?

I can only speak from personal experience, but the GP1300R hull is sheet molded compound. from what i've read, it is supposed to be thinner, lighter, and stronger. however, after putting 9 hours on mine, it cracked. i am taking it to the dealer today and yamaha is paying to have a local marine fiberglass business repair the hull.

Sheet molded compound is the same material they use for the outer panels on the Corvette. It's thinner, lighter and stronger than fiberglass.

Oh that's too bad, do you ride in chop? how did it crack? IMO after 9 hours is just insane. I haven't heard of 1200 hulls being an issue for crack.

Yamaha has been using SMC for years. I've repaired some crate damage on a 1300R and it looked like the same old SMC. Unless they went thinner in '03, it's probably the same as previous years.

what is the best way to reinforce the hull on a 97 gp if you dont have the factory reinforcement kit ?? [Confused]
