After pondering the purchase of the 02, I have run across a good deal on an 00 with 20 hours on the clock. I had been told at one point that the 00's and early 01's had a power valve issue. What exactly is the problem and how will I know if I have it? I have heard that it will fall flat on its face at full throttle or something like that. Also, can the issue be corrected by using the 02 model valves or is that going to cost a fortune?
The 00 is looking like a good deal since I imagine I would be voiding any warranty anyway...

The OEM power valve actuator arms can be replaced with a R&D replacement for about $100. The 2000 power valves can be replaced with the 2002 valves for about $300. There is some disagreement over whether one or both need to be replaced. You may be able to get away with just doing the arms or just the valves. If you do both, odds are the problem is solved. I have a stock 2000 and have had no failure yet but I plan on replacing the arms. When the valves fail, this sometimes leads to other significant engine damage. Thus the conservative approach is to replace the valves and arms both.
Good news is after talking to a yamaha rep today, I asked her about these failing after the waranty period. She said anything that has a service bulliten out would be covered if it failed out of warranty. I am documenting names times, etc, but it is nice to know that.

dsiggi- Please let me know more about this! Will they change them before they fail or do I have to wait for them to bail. The boat that I just bought (Fercho: 5700 with trailer, jackets, bumpers, ties, ropes, full jug of oil) has 24 hours on it and looks to be in wonderful condition.
If the dealers will be taking care of that, that would be great. Are these difficult items to swap? I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but not the greatest.
Please keep me informe with any info that you find. That is great!

dsiggi, i may have had a power valve failure today on my 2000 XL1200. I will do a separate post explaining the situation and see what I find out. Mine only has 22 hours, so I would like your Yamaha rep's name to add to the list in case that is what it is.
Well, no they wont replace them before they fail as I understand it. Some say it is worth talking to the dealer about before they fail others say dont bother you wont get anywhere. As for the rep I talked to, looks like they wont replace them till they fail. However, if they do fail out of waranty they will cover it because of a service bulletin. The person I talked to was Kathy, I believe.

I paid 5400 for mine this spring but I am having issues already (see post on engine failure). I am wondering if it was a good deal now. dsiggi - Was Kathy at the 800 yamaha number or a local rep?
