Get this, I beat a 99 Ultra yesterday. GFU and I were launching and this redneck kid (remember my Billy-Bob teeth?) comes up to me and starts asking questions about my Yamahas, bla bla bla. His Ultra does 84 mph, bla bla bla. He's talking enough for me to know he don't know s.h.i.t about skis. Then he asks me if i want to race. Knowing that an Ultra is faster than a GPR I reluctantly agreed.
We lined up about 1/4 mile down river from the ramp, his redneck buddies are on the bank watching.I just know this is going to be bad for me, stock GPR and all. I lined up with him and started talking to him while idleing letting the plugs load up, you know how the 2 strokes are bad about loading up at idle, but this kid didn't. He says "you ready", I say "hold on a second" and did a couple of 360 to clear my plugs and then lined back up.
Redneck called "GO", as bad as the GPR is out of the hole I still beat him out by a good 6-7 boat lengths. By the time we got to his buddies I was still 3 lengths ahead but he was reeling the GPR in.

This is where it gets good.

There is a wake-board boat ahead of us throwing a massive wake and redneck ain't backing off. I keep the throttle pinned and skip across the top of the wake, look back and see the Ultra but no rider.
He hit that wake full speed and got his azz thrown good. I rode back to him and told him
to "keep your azz on the porch until your ready to run with us big dogs".

I then went back to the ramp and bragged to his redneck buddies.

It was a great day, I out ran, and out raced an obviously faster boat.

I just needed to brag.

Good Job Ed.

Those Ultras don't like rough water. I imagine if the right rider with handling mods is done its another story. I had a somewhat similar experience a week ago with my GP1200. I spanked that guy bad. He couldn't keep hooked up. I basically ran away from him.

One of these days I'll get my come-upn's. Nah Big Grin

I am going to have to go to a different lake, I have had my modded GPR out 4 times now and have yet to find an XPL or Ultra 150 that will race me.
The only ski that I have lined up against was a 2001 GPR that was bone stock, and I was riding the bone stock ski. It did feel good to watch my ski pull away, but it would have been better if I was riding it.

It's people like that kid who make all us Ski riders look bad.....what a fool.....I hate it when guys think the dreamo is right.......

I ride an Ultra, but I'm glad you handed him his azz......he needed it....and the part about him being launched!...too funny....I've been there....

but now I have handling mods which reduce that risk 100 fold.....handles great in the rough now.

I ran a modded GPR on a choppy river and left him pretty good, he said he was doing the stinger mod next, and that he ran ~ 65 at that point.....I run 66-68 so I should have won......he did make an excuse about if he didn't have to cross that wave he would've caught me, fact is, I had the same wakes to navigate that he did.....

this guy was cool, however, and it was all in good fun...for me, win or lose It's the challenge that's exhilarating!!

but idiots like the one you met, I hope he's sore for a week!!!

great story.....from an Ultra Owner....

Well if you get a good rider in the rough you may get killed if you do not have a PV controller.

In the interest of good sportsmanship, I sent this thread to the ultra150.com boards. It sort of balances out the "Smoked a GPR" threads that are usually started by people with less than a year on a PWC, have never raced anything other than a straight line, need help changing their spark plugs, and will probably have a "For Sale" sign on their ski by next spring.

I owned a 99 Ultra and it was the fastest straight line PWC ever made as long as the water is flat. After $1,000 in mods, it was faster but did nothing for handling. I have a 00 GPR which has its own set of issues, but it handles 100% better.

I guess my point is, that the brand and model have no correlation with the intelligence of the operator. I have owned Sea-Doos also and that doesn't make me an idiot, buying another one might though.

I almost got ran over by a couple of guys (18-21yrs) on a Seadoo GTX. Came up from behind. The waterway was congested so I slowed down to pass a family on a pontoon boat and this guy came up from right side of me less than 20 from the shoreline and splashed me cause he was so close then proceeded to splash the family in the pontoon boat. I came up to the pontoon boat and apologized for their rudeness. They wanted to catch them but pontoon boat was no match...My XL1200 was more than a match...went after them and they pulled over and I told them they splashed me. They aplogized rather poorly. At that time the pontoon boat caught up and the guy on the boat was cussing at them and the guys mumbled that if you come to the waterway, what do you expect?..

Another Nail in the sport of Watercraft.

Be careful with those rednecks. They are the kind of people that key your car or slash your tires after you leave the ramp to go ride. Especially a gang of them. If they want to race and you beat them, leave it at that. Any extra lip and your asking for one of those cowards to do something stupid.

Got that right. I was at the river once in Blythe and I was looking for a camp site for the day. there was this big beach area and these people were on one side. I pulled in to the far side so I wouldnt bug them. I launched and the guy came over with a attitude. He told me Im gonna get stufk yadda yadda. I said I have 4 wheel drive with a locker so i doubt it. He said he did and I looked at his truck a 2 wheel drive chevy with street tires. I said I doubt Ill get stuck. ( Ive launched there before) so anyway he starts telling me that there is a launch ramp further down and I need to go there. I felt a confrontation coming on and asked the guy if he owned the beach. he got all ****** . than the guy asks me how old my skis are so i told him. he said well they look really old liek they were made in the early 80s. I wasnt gonna argue with him, and I started to pack up. i reloaded my skis and he keeps talking. He tells me that his skis do 67 MPh bla bla bla. I loked at the skis ( xlt1200s both of them) I said I doubt it but whatever) heasked if I wanted to race. I said Ill go launch somewhere else and Ill be back. as he left he was calling me names and something about slow *** boats I had. granted my wifes GTX is a 580 and not a speed king by far but she likes it and thats that. so anyway i launch and go looking for him. found him kicked his *** 3 times.
the first excuse was he wasnt ready, the second was I jumped the gun the third was the ski sint running right. I told him thats ok neither was mine ( it wasnt running right I was tuning it)
than he started on how mine is modified bla bla bla. I cant stand a$$holes like that. besides later I thought about it the dude was drunk off his *** but he was outthere riding with his kids. what a jerkoff.
I finally packed up and moved way upriver form him.
