I am getting ready to purchase an 01 gpr. Should I worry about having my power vavles go bad? I am going to keep the ski stock except for pump plug, impeller and maybe an intake grate. I would buy an 02 but money is tight and every penny i can save is worth it.
Thanks
Joe

I'm in the same boat, looking at 01 and 02. I'm hearing the power valves on the 02 engine are better?

there are three series of powervalves... the original ???partnumber, then came -03partnumber for the 2001gpr, now there is the -10partnumber for the 2002gpr (depends upon when the production change was implemented).

even if you get the newest powervalves and they are improved, nobody will garantee it, you will always have to be aware and check. Not sure if the new ones -10version are like the R&D ones that feature a design that does not allow failure (valve to drop) to happen. Nothings been proven to a point, yes there are improvements but untill such time that they are full proof keep checking them!!!

If buying a 2001 GPR I would suggest ensuring they have the -03partnumber power valves. Earlier 2001 models did not. This has been a much discussed item on the forum.

Mike if you have a 2001 GPR or XLL remove the bolt that holds the power valve bushing if the lenght is 14mm you have an -03 if it is 10mm you have an earlier release.

Here you go!!!

Ok after looking it over, It's the -03 that I want, not the -02 right? Also If I do have the bad one, how do I correct it?

Cheers
Mike

FRIENDS FRIENDS PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ANY OEM YAMAHA UPDATED POWER VALVE THEY ARE JUNK. THE ONLY ONE YOU CAN PLAY SAFE IS THE AFTERMARKET R/D VERSION THIS P/V HAS A SUPERIOR DESING OVER THE REST. Please search some Ray in Japan early post he explain in detail the reason for this. Wink p.s. one forum member replace his old style 00 power valves in favor of the updates 01 ones and suffer a catastrophic engine failure do to the fact that they also drop the "holding" pin (like the early ones) and his oem updated p/v goes all the way down touching the pistons and his engine became sh***....... quoted from Bret@tsi: The new yamaha (03 version) are better and prevent piston contact, BUT I HAVE SEEN ISSUES WITH THE PINS THAT CONNECT TO THE LINKAGE COMING OUT IN THOSE TO. You can check this info in "GPR power valve failure" 10/25/2001 More info quoted from Fercho: Spoke to a yamaha tech support today he beleives that the cause of the power valve cross pin failure is heat. The new -10 valves are made of different materials they look billet aluminum to me. You can check this info in "-10 Power Valves" Maybe this the (-10 version) and the R/D ones are the only way to go Wink

Thanks for all the responses but i never really got my question answered. Money is the biggest problem i have. If i want to get a gpr i will have to get a left over 01. I wont be able to afford an 02. Will i have to worry about the power valves going bad? If they do, how much will it cost to replace them? I am going to keep my engine stock so will that help in prevent power valve failure? I think my dealer has 3 01 gprs so i'll buy the one with the lastest productin date.
Thanks
Joe

How do you check for the part number on the powervalves to see which one you have?

IL explain to the dealership the fears that you have about power valve failure and let them know that it is a huge concern and has turned you off about getting an 01 model.BUT.............If they are willing to sell you an Extended warranty at cost you would seriously consider it.

They need to clear those machines out to get the new ones in.

By the way the problem with them failing is not having to replace them is them destroying your engine

Fercho, so you think i should go with the 01 if i can get him to throw in an extended warrenty? Also, the pump plug, intake grate, and impeller wont effect the warrenty will they? Thanks you have been a great help.

Joe, get an extended warranty and a good compression gage. Learn how to check compression with the valves open and closed and look for no change in compression with them on either position at that moment take it to the dealer inmediatly.

The warranty should not be affected by pump bolt on parts.

GPsleepR... I live just south of dayton. I am not going to buy my ski here though. My parents have a summer home on Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee. I am going down there this coming weekend and I am going to buy it at Dale Hollow power sports. I am going to get the 01 gpr cause i cant afford an 02. I think i'll be ok though. I'm gonna get the latest production model he has with an extended warrenty and just keep an eye on my compression like fercho said. What part of ohio are you from?

with the powervalve delema, think of it this way although the newest -10 version for the 2002 model may be additionaly better/safer, ITS STILL NO GARRANTEE, and youll may have to spend money in upgrades later anyways either or the 2001 or 2002, you would still need to check those powervavles.

it not a question of which is better, you will need to check those vavles (any of them) for failure. say you have a one year warrantee, and the next day they fail??? what if after the third year warrantee expires, the next day the vavles fail.

enjoy the new ski, like any other ski you got maintenance.
