I'm debating between buying a 2001 or a 2002 and would like to know if there are any differences? Thank you for all you can tell me, it will help with my decision.
i also have to think about a 01 or 02. if that is the only diff. between the two then i think ill go with the 01. the new graphics and diff. power valves arent worth the extra cost imo. also, could the 02 gpr in the u.s. differ from the 02 on the Australian site? and why would it be a good time to buy in the summer? isnt that when they are more firm on the price?
Just the power valves are a good enoug reason to buy a 2002. With more GPRs XLL and XLT's out, vulnerable to power valve failure there will be a supply problem. Now you are talking about 2-3 months back ordered until the parts get here from Japan. There goes the season.
The Australian GPR has a different Jetting that would be too rich for the states, It has a different CDI and the instrument panel reads in Kilomoters instead of Miles.
Fercho, how did you hear that the powervalves were changed? All the dealers here in Hawaii say that the GPR's are the same for 2002. In the December issue of PWI volume 15 number 12 with the guy on the stand up polaris on the cover it says: Quote: Returning for its third year, the 2002 Yamaha GP1200R is the same as the 2001 model, with the exception of bold new graphics. Again, the GP1200R boasts a Yamaha blue and white color scheme. Unquote. That was the first paragraph of the article. Unless Yamaha is keeping the powervalve change a secret from the general public, thus admitting that there is a problem with the powervalves. **** , Fercho, your always right about everything else, Im sure you know something that we dont.

Path in November I had some power valves replaced for a 2000 GPR. The newest valves that we knew of at that point were the -03 release the ones we got were -10. I can only assume that the 2002 GPR will have the -10 release and not the -03. On the other hand not all of the 2001 GPR came with the 03 valves. Sales people at the dealer dont no jack. Remember that they want and need to sale old inventory. You need to talk to the mechanics, they are the ones that actually get the Tech service updates.
Fercho, whats the best way to tel what pv's you got? I know the salesman dont know jack, but thats what the service tech told me back in October when I took my 01 in for warranty work. Is this a change that is not big enough to make an announcement for?

Fercho, I just recieved an brand new 02 motor and it has the new -10 powervalves that have the billett appearance to them. COmpared to my 00 motor sitting side by side, the power valves are very different.
Phat, the dealers never know about the small mechanical changes. All they know is hp is the same. NO one knew wt the time when the 01 were released that they didnt even have the same CDI in them and werent swapable. The 01 CDI updates faster. I can tell you the the powervalves in the 02 are different in many ways! Outside, the only changes are graphics. Inside there may be even more details to be discovered.

Phat there was an announcement. anytime that yamaha replaces a part number there is always an announcement. The only ones that receive it are the dealerships as technical service updates.
Yamaha will never recall any parts. So dont expect a recall notice in the mail. Go.... I hope you did not get a set of -03
