I'm trying to determine what is going bad on my 1995 SPX. The VTS motor does not work consistently. After sitting through the winter, I charged the battery and fired the ski up no problem. The only problem was that the trim didn't work. I pulled the motor off from the gear unit and it still didn't work. I hooked up the motor directly to the battery and it spun both ways no problem. I put the motor back in and nothing. I hooked up a charger to the battery and everything worked so I figure I needed a new battery. I replaced the battery and that day, no problem. I didn't run the ski for a week and went out to see if the trim worked, nothing but a click. I hooked it up to the charger again and it worked. My assumption is that perhaps the motor is requiring too much power and thus bad. Now that you have read this novel, how can I confirm? Also, where is the bast place to get a motor, new or rebuilt, or is there a place that rebuilds them? Thanks

You may want to open the rear electrical box and check the fuse and fuse holder for the VTS system. If you have a leak allowing water into the box, the VTS fuse and harness will be the first to go as they sit at the lowest point in the box.

I had this happen to my '98 SPX and initially I thought it was the VTS. I replaced the control box for the VTS and opened and cleaned the VTS motor as well. It made no difference. Then I checked the electrical box.

It was the cheap problem for a change!

If that is the case with yours as well, you may want to check the gasket on the rear electrical box. It tends to be difficult to get into place and put the cover on over. It will get stretched out and leak if you aren't careful when putting the cover on.
